Isn’t the world going all gaga over the word “organic”? Skin products, hair products, vegetables, and fruits – they all have an “organic” option now.
The word organic holds different meaning to different people. People who are health conscious pictures it as something that will be nutritious and healthier than the regular products while the environmentalists pictures it as an eco-friendly option that will help them do something good for the environment. But, whether organic food really better for us and environment, yet an unsolved mystery.
If you are in this “get healthy” zone then you must have been torn between choosing regular whole grains, vegetables, fruits or the organic ones. Organic produce is claimed to be more nutritious and better in taste which is why it is more expensive than the regular produce.
But hey! if you don’t know yet…all expensive things aren’t good! For sure organic produce has many pros but the advantages are not totally backed up scientifically.
So, let’s understand the exact details of organic produce by dividing it into two parts – pros and cons. This way, it will be easier for you to make a choice in future.
PROS
Animal farming for organic produce is carried out in a more ethical ways than that for normal produce. Animals are provided better life conditions and are treated humanely. In conventional farming, they are been given growth hormones for faster growth but it’s not the same with organic farming.
There are strict rules for getting organic food certification. Different countries have different standards that need to be meet and they are quite strict with it.
Organic produce has a higher level of minerals, vitamin c, antioxidants, etc. that protects body through various heart diseases and cancer.
Of course, fewer pesticides are used so overall good for health and environment. If you are fine with the cost, you are good to go!
CONS
No regular pesticides are used but the organic pesticides used do have harmful impacts on the environment. The belief that the organic pesticides come from natural resources is not completely true, many organic pesticides contain same ingredients as that of regular ones. The health risks are almost parallel.
Since organic produce is free of insecticides and herbicides there are high chances of them to have more pests and weeds. Hence, they produce natural toxins themselves.
No matter if your food is organic or regular, if it is sitting there for a longer period of time and is not consumed when fresh, they lose all the nutrients.
Don’t confuse the word “Natural” with “Organic” they all have different meanings.
You see, the big picture is in front of you and it’s totally in your hands to make wise choices. According to me if you eat fresh fruits and vegetables daily, it doesn’t matter if you’re consuming organic or regular ones.
